As senior-level leaders reflect on their career trajectories, the Electronics and Semiconductors sector presents unique challenges and opportunities. Zach Fountain, Sector Lead for Electronics and Semiconductors EMEA at Pacific International Executive Search, shares his expert insights on sector performance, key challenges, 2025 predictions, and strategic career advice.
Sector Performance in 2024
The Electronics and Semiconductors sector faced a turbulent 2024. What began with optimism was soon overshadowed by disruptions in the electric vehicle (EV) industry, which significantly slowed the entire sector. From large corporations to smaller players, many struggled, resulting in widespread layoffs. While the American market showed signs of recovery in the second half, it did not reach the anticipated levels. The European market remained slow, hampered by delays in funding from the European CHIPs Act.
Key Challenges and Predictions for 2025
The sector will continue grappling with slow-moving economies and ongoing geopolitical crises. The heavy reliance on the EV industry presents a challenge as companies pivot to diversify their focus. However, there is room for optimism. I anticipate a market rebound with stronger-than-expected Q4 results, leading to moderate growth rather than hyper-growth in 2025.
Hiring Trends and Skills in Demand
There is a noticeable gap in talent for Lean, Operational Excellence (OpEx), and Continuous Improvement (CI). After years of substantial capital expenditure and rapid growth, many companies have underdeveloped these critical functions. Conversations with stakeholders reveal a pressing need for skilled professionals in these areas, yet the talent pool remains limited. Renewable Energy sector offer some critical skills overlap, depending on specific needs. Additionally, there are significant synergies with the industrial sector, which can provide valuable insights and opportunities for cross-industry collaboration.
Diversity and Inclusion
Diversity remains a critical area of focus. The Electronics industry, like many others, is still predominantly male and often led by European-centric leadership teams. Expanding diversity at the leadership level is essential. Encouraging diverse perspectives strengthens business conversations and fosters more insightful discussions, ultimately driving innovation and growth.
